In the original The Tempest, the sailors appear only at the play’s margins, their understanding of the island’s enchantments filtered through snatches of wind-borne song and centuries of warped oral tradition. This production seeks the truth behind those mutations. The actors serve as sailors who perform the entire tale, weaving Shakespeare’s text into traditional sea shanties scored for flute, guitar, and percussion. Yet, this is more than a retelling: Prospero’s lingering magic forces the story’s pivotal characters to actually materialize. As the sailors dissolve, these figures emerge from the myth to defend their actions and reclaim their own histories.
