Romeo and Juliet radically reframes the Shakespearean narrative by focusing on the matriarchal power structure highlighting the formidable women leading the two rival houses and how they absorb the traditional roles of family patriarchs. This dramaturgical pivot extends to a female Prince and a gender-flipped Mercutio, reimagining the play’s inherent volatility through a female-oriented lens.
Enhanced by Blagoj Micevski’s eclectic-modern aesthetic, the production further explores emotional displacement through a striking bilingual evolution. The performance begins in Armenian and shifts into English at pivotal moments of character transformation, with the Nurse serving as the final linguistic holdout. By weaving these shifting languages and gender dynamics into the playing of the text, the production captures the raw, confused momentum of a world in constant motion.
